To the editor:
There are many reasons I am voting for Seth Moulton on Sept 1. Here is one.
I recently retired after 40-plus years as a family physician in Hamilton and Ipswich. Our country needs access to health care for all. Moulton understands this, and supports making health care a human right — just like education is in Massachusetts. This is the same position held by the Massachusetts Medical Society, of which I was recently president.
“Medicare for All” is an empty slogan that won’t get us there. Why not? Because Medicare is a flawed, incomplete program. It has a 20% copay and no coverage for medications. Those of us who use Medicare get around these problems by buying additional coverage, or by signing on with a Medicare Advantage plan — each run by a private insurer with its own rules. These are extra steps that would cause confusion and inequity if this system were expanded to all. Voters would reject it.
What we need is a system that works for all legal residents, without these drawbacks. Moulton understands this and supports a realistic path to create a truly universal system of coverage. As in other areas, he understands that paying lip service to an old, failed approach won’t reach our goal. We need a senator with the courage and energy to find a new path forward.
