Boxford Select Board appoints A.J. Paglia as police captain

BOXFORD — The select board has unanimously appointed Attilio “A.J.” Paglia as captain of the Boxford Police Department.

He was formally recommended by police chief James Riter and will serve as second in command. The appointment is effective immediately. 

“Sergeant Paglia joined the police department in 1998 as a reserve officer,” Riter said. “He was promoted to sergeant in 2023, and I’m proud to recommend him now for the rank of captain. He has been a steady and committed presence for our community for over two decades.” 

In his new role, Paglia will oversee operations, support personnel, and assist with departmental planning. 

Speaking at the meeting, Paglia called the promotion “an honor and a privilege.”

“I enjoy coming to work every day. I love the town of Boxford — it’s a wonderful community. It’s also an honor to work under the fine leadership of Chief Riter, who lives the mission of the department every day. I look forward to continuing to serve as part of his command staff in this new capacity and helping achieve the department’s goals,” he said.

State Senator Bruce Tarr, who attended the meeting, said Paglia “is a consummate professional who represents the very best in community policing. He builds trust, respect, and collaboration—whether it’s with Boxford residents or law enforcement colleagues across the region.”
