NEWBURY — Two motorcycles that had been riding together collided on Route 1 in Newbury on Thursday night, leaving one man dead and another facing several criminal charges, authorities said.
Police responded to a reported motorcycle crash at around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday. They found a man seriously injured, according to Newbury Police Chief Patricia Fisher.
The man was transported to Anne Jacques Hospital in Newburyport, where he later died.
On Friday, the Essex County District Attorney’s office identified the man as James Turcotte, 63, of Danvers.
The D.A.’s office also identified Scott Dambrosio of Boxford as the other motorcyclist involved in the crash.
Dambrosio, 55, was later arrested by Boxford Police and charged with negligent operation, operating under the influence, and leaving the scene of a personal injury collision resulting in death, the D.A.’s office said in a statement.
At his arraignment in Haverhill District Court on Friday, Dambrosio plead not guilty to operating under the influence of liquor.
He was held on $5,000 bail with an outstanding warrant from the Newbury Police Department and is expected to be arraigned on the negligent operation and leaving the scene charges in Newburyport District Court on Monday.
Newbury Police have requested that any witnesses or anybody with surveillance footage of the area overlooking Route 1 south or Middle Road in Newbury contact Detective Stephen Jenkins at (978) 462-4440, ext. 127.
The investigation is being conducted by the Newbury and Massachusetts State police departments.
Emergency response was conducted by the Newbury, Newburyport, Rowley, and Boxford police departments, with assistance from the Newbury fire department and Atlantic Ambulance Co.
Chief Fisher thanked the public for their cooperation during the closure of Route 1.
