In the first of two rivalry weeks, Triton/Ipswich football took the former’s traditional rival, Newburyport, to overtime before falling, 27-21 on Friday night.
Royce Whitney, the Vikings (1-2) best rusher, got Triton out to an early lead, with a four-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Newburyport used their strong passing game, led by quarterback Tim Sheehan, to get into the end zone early in the second quarter, but the Clippers’ conversion attempt failed. Triton extended their lead off anOran MacDonald field goal a few minutes later. With 14 seconds left before the half, Newburyport scored a rushing touchdown to take their first lead of the game.
MacDonald hit a 38-yard field goal midway through the third quarter for the Vikings, but Newburyport used a quarterback keeper in the last two minutes of the quarter to extend their lead.
Triton pulled ahead with nine minutes left in the fourth, off another rushing touchdown by Whitney, but with just over a minute left in the game, the Clippers just narrowly made a field goal to tie the game and send it to overtime.
In extra time, Newburyport (2-1) counted on Sheehan’s legs again to score a touchdown, and Triton/Ipswich was unable to answer.
Next week, Triton/Ipswich hosts Ipswich’s longtime Thanksgiving Day rival, Hamilton-Wenham, for an “Orange Out” game at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Triton.
