IPSWICH — Wolf Hollow announced last Monday that it has welcomed three new Arctic wolf pups into its pack.
The five-month old pups, two females and one male, were born at Maryland’s Plumpton Park Zoo in late March and needed a home, the nonprofit said.
Since its founding in 1988, Wolf Hollow has been dedicated to protecting and housing wolves.
The sanctuary initially planned to welcome new pups next spring after taking time to grieve the loss of two beloved wolves earlier this year, but when the opportunity arose, staff said they just couldn’t ignore it.
The pups are the younger siblings of two wolves at Wolf Hollow, Vilkas and Togo and their late sister, Skadi.
Staff members said they decided to embrace the opportunity and take in the pups, knowing they would enrich the lives of Togo and Vilkas.
Togo and Vilkas were already extremely interested in the pups when they first arrived, they said, trying to share high-value treats and showing them around the main enclosure.
The two have shown incredible patience and joy, and the transition has brought a “renewed sense of vitality to our pack,” they added.
The Wolf Hollow team described the last few months as “a journey through loss, healing, and the unexpected joy of new life.”
“The arrival of these pups signifies the circle of life,” they said. “A summer that began with heartache is closing with hope and new possibilities, reminding us of the beauty of life’s cycles.”
The nonprofit held a naming contest for the male pup online through Monday.
Director Zee Soffron named one of the female pups Sila (pronounced see-la). Her name refers to “the spirit of the air, weather, sky, or the vital breath of life, representing a deep bond with nature,” Communications Manager Viana Newton said.
Staff members are hosting their own contest to name the other female pup, Newton said.
